Program Overview
- Program Description:
- Graduate students in dance may earn an MFA in Dance, an MA in Dance, or an MA with an option for New York State Teacher Certification, Pre K-12. Students study with faculty and professional staff who are nationally and internationally recognized in their areas of expertise through writing, teaching, choreography and performance. Housed in three floors of the south wing in the renovated Hartwell Hall, the program’s facilities include a 280-seat proscenium Hartwell Dance Theater and the 250-seat Rose L. Strasser Studio performance space. There is ample opportunity for students, faculty and guest artists to choreograph, perform, and present work in facilities that include: five spacious studios with audio and video capability, grand piano and sprung floors for classes and rehearsals seven days a week; ample men's and women's dressing rooms and lockers; a dance conditioning room; heated health pool with barres and jets; costume shop; and an extensive library collection for dance research. While at The College at Brockport, graduate students may perform in faculty and guest artist work, choreograph their own work or assist in directing the departmental touring company. They may travel to regional/national conferences and festivals; study dance in Japan, Ghana, England, and Jamaica; and go to New York and other cities for approved and credited apprenticeships or dance study. They may also collaborate with artists from the Eastman School of Music and the Rochester Institute of Technology in the Image/Movement/ Sound Festival; intern with local arts organizations; earn Somatic Movement Education Certification in collaboration with East-West Somatics Institute; and pursue New York State Pre K-12 Teacher Certification. Upon completion of their degrees, graduates go on to become Pre K-12, college and university artists/teachers and researchers, performers and choreographers, dance administrators and managers.
