Program Description:
This 48 credit hour Master in Public Health program is a hybrid program, with classes provided both on campus and through distance technology. The MPH program provides specific competency-based training in such areas as terrorism response capabilities, fundamentals of infectious diseases, emergency response planning and crisis communication. Two semesters (15 credit hours) of residency for full-time students are required, as well as a Practice Experience (which is similar to an internship). The program is provided through the School of Public Health at Saint Louis University, a fully accredited school of public health. Students in the MPH program in Biosecurity & Disaster Preparedness can choose from the following program options to complete the concentration alone, or in combination with the following disciplines: • MPH with a concentration in Biosecurity & Disaster Preparedness (48 hours--above) • Joint MPH in Environmental & Occupational Health and Biosecurity & Disaster Preparedness (54 hours) This joint concentration degree allows students to combine related disciplines in order to be marketable in both the public and private sector. Program graduates will be uniquely and specifically prepared for management positions combining the skill sets employed by environmental specialists, industrial hygienists, hazardous waste managers, and air quality experts, but with a disaster planning, response, and mitigation focus. • Joint MPH in Epidemiology and Biosecurity & Disaster Preparedness (54 hours) Program graduates in this joint concentration will be uniquely and specifically prepared for management positions combining the skill sets employed by epidemiologists and disaster preparedness professionals. It includes the study of disease outbreak investigation and control, and quality and cost effectiveness of care, but with a disaster planning, response, and mitigation focus. More information on the MPH degree can be found on the Saint Louis University School of Public Health web site MPH page. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Public Health Studies with a concentration in Biosecurity & Disaster Preparedness This program provides the knowledge and skills required for biosecurity professionals to work in public health research, education or academic practice, and/or consulting. The program includes on-line courses, but also requires 2-3 years of residency at Saint Louis University. The doctoral program allows students to study and work side-by-side with nationally known educators and researchers who serve as mentors. Recent graduates have taken positions as faculty members, researchers with federal agencies, and professionals within the private health care sector. More information on the Doctoral program can be found on the Saint Louis University School of Public Health website.
