Program Overview

Program Description:

The Department of Special Education offers program plans leading to a Master of Science degree. The student's program of study may be designed to emphasize education of the developmentally disabled, the specific learning disabled, the emotionally/behaviorally disordered, the mildly handicapped (master consultingteacher), or the gifted and talented. An early childhood/special needs licensure is also available in a joint program with the Department of Child and Family Studies. An introductory course on the education of exceptional children is required for admission to this program. Degrees and Plans Offered Master of Science: Special Education, Plan A (Thesis) 30 credits. Master of Science: Special Education, Plan B (One Starred Paper) 33 credits. Certificate Program: Students who complete the program will receive a certificate.

Requirements:

A minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75. Three letters of recommendation. The GRE is required with a score in the 25th percentile or higher. See program website for exceptions. Personal statement. Language testing scores(International Students). Pre-Admission Interview.

International Requirements:

In addition to submitting an application, application fee, GRE/GMAT scores if required by program, and 3 letters of recommendation, international students must also submit scores from a language admission exam and financial documentation stating that the student can cover the cost of graduate study. Qualifying language admission exams and required scores are as follows: TOEFL: 550 on the paper exam or 79 on the iBT with no subscore under 17; Michigan Placement Test: 80; IELTS: 6.5
