Program Description:
We offer the only Professional Science Masters (PSM) program in the state of Minnesota in Materials Science and Instrumentation. The program is a professional master’s degree program that will allow students to pursue advanced academic knowledge and hands-on experiences, while developing professional workplace skills. This Professional Science Masters (PSM) program is designed to equip students with the necessary skills and competencies which in turn will prepare then to be effective professionals and leaders in the area of Material Science and Instrumentation. It will build a solid foundation for individuals aspiring to become material science professionals, and help expand and solidify the knowledge of individuals that are current professionals in the field. The inter-disciplinary program focuses on material science and nano-technology from the viewpoints of chemical structure, composition, and characterization of materials. In addition, the PLUS courses will provide foundations in communication and business skills, ethics, and manufacturing process and quality control. These graduates will be (i) Interdisciplinary Scientists who can work at the interface of science and technology, (ii) innovative Problem-Solvers who are capable of addressing challenges and opportunities in the real world, and (iii) Excellent Communicators who can serve as liaisons between corporate research groups and business administration.

Requirements:
The program is open to recent undergraduates and professionals interested in advancing their academic knowledge and hands-on experience. Applicants should hold a four-year degree in Science, Chemistry, Engineering, or related fields or have industrial experience. Recent graduates without industrial experience will need a minimum of four-semesters of undergraduate research and/or successful completion of a senior design project and a recommendation from their UG advisor. The GRE is required for individuals applying directly from an undergraduate experience. The GRE is waived for individuals with a post-baccalaureate degree or with substantial years of industry experience. The director and selected faculty teaching in the Material Science and Instrumentation program will review applications to ensure each candidate’s qualifications. Admission decisions are made on a rolling basis throughout the year and admission is offered for the next available term.
