Program Description:
Graduate study in Adapted Physical Activity is available through a Master’s of Science Degree Program for individuals who possess undergraduate degrees in physical education, teacher education, exercise science, recreation therapy, special education, athletic training or other related fields. The program is designed specifically for professionals who desire to expand their professional credentials and apply those to health promotion and wellness programs for persons with disabilities of all ages. The health status of persons with disabilities is a critical and emerging need in the human service profession and is a field of employment estimated to grow faster than most other fields by 30% employment over the next 10 years. This program encourages students from multidisciplinary backgrounds of study to enroll and focus upon transition physical activity and wellness programs across the lifespan for persons with disabilities. Students are expected to enter the program with a basic knowledge of applied anatomy and at minimum an introductory course focusing upon disability or previous experience in the field. The Master of Science degree in Adapted Physical Activity is a 30-credit hour program. This is a non-thesis program which includes a research project and culminates in a required six-hour internship experience during the summer. Examples of internships could include experiences such as the NASA headquarters in Florida - providing fitness programs for employees with disabilities; the Lakeshore Foundation in Alabama - working with Paralympics athletes for the Olympic Games; or at the Paralympics Olympic site in Colorado.
