Program Description:

The Master of Science in Nursing Nurse-Midwifery track prepares the nurse with the necessary skills and knowledge to lead the profession in the promotion of high quality midwifery care; to expand knowledge through research; and to evaluate and revise care through quality assurance. The program can be completed in 24 months full-time with summer courses. A part-time program is available. Cohorts are established in September or January. All core courses are only offered on campus on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Midwifery courses are offered on campus one full intensive week per semester with remainder of courses offered online. Clinical placement is arranged by faculty and will be scheduled at the convenience of the facility hosting the student. For students from Schools of Nursing at Radford University, Old Dominion University, The John Hopkins University, Marshall University, James Madison University, and West Virginia Wesleyan College, please refer to the information for midwifery course completion through the Shenandoah University Midwifery Initiative. The School of Nursing offers a Nurse-Midwifery Certificate for RNs who already hold a Master of Science in Nursing degree. The Nurse-Midwifery Certificate is designed to provide the student with the necessary skills and knowledge to assume the role of a certified nurse-midwife in a variety of clinical settings pertinent to nurse-midwifery care. Didactic and clinical course content focuses on role development, assessment and management of women’s health, antepartal, intrapartal, postpartal, and neonatal periods as well as primary women’s health throughout the lifespan. Clinical experiences are in a wide variety of ambulatory and community rural and medically underserved health care settings appropriate to the nurse-midwifery track.
