Program Overview
- Program Description:
- At SCAD, students gain essential preparation by writing fiction and nonfiction work, by writing and editing for online and print publications, and by writing for new media. The writing program at SCAD takes a holistic approach, fostering both passion and practicality. The program offers instruction in a wide range of genres, including creative nonfiction, fiction, magazine journalism and new media writing, writing for business, and writing for nonprofit. All writing students benefit from a foundation in visual art, which makes them better writers and artists, and from design and computer applications that help prepare them for work with multi-media and new media content. At both the undergraduate and graduate levels, students learn to produce professional-quality writing. They learn to market themselves and promote their work, pitch their story ideas to publications, and publish their writing. Dedicated, actively publishing faculty members who possess terminal degrees serve as constant inspiration for students. In addition, numerous best-selling authors and industry experts visit and provide insight into the practical aspects of professional writing, share their work, and offer feedback to student writers. Recent visitors include Margaret Atwood, Augusten Burroughs, Bret Easton Ellis, Stanley Fish, David Shields and Colson Whitehead. The M.F.A. in writing is offered at SCAD Atlanta and SCAD Savannah.
