Candidates also pursue graduate-level courses in their arts disciplines. M.A.T. candidates learn to elicit high student engagement, consider cultural and historical contexts, and foster higher order thinking, collaboration and inquiry. In addition to project-based learning, candidates become familiar with general instructional strategies associated with the history of the field and recent theoretical developments. This one-year intensive graduate program includes a field component. The cohort class begins in summer and learns theories and methods grounded in practical experience. Candidates benefit from field experience and student teaching in a variety of settings. Professional staff assist students in securing placements that satisfy individual and regulatory criteria. The M.A.T. art and drama programs are approved by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission and are designed to meet the State of Georgia standards for initial certification in art or drama. Georgia participates in an interstate agreement and shares certification reciprocity with 51 jurisdictions throughout the United States. SCAD M.A.T. programs are aligned with the Georgia 2000 standards, Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium visual arts and theater standards.
