Program Overview
- Program Description:
- At SCAD, performing arts students develop skills within an arts environment where visual creativity, advanced design technologies, hands-on production and cultural dialogue are emphasized. In collaboration with the film and television department, the fashion and animation departments, and the interactive design and game development department, students participate in a wide range of performance opportunities. Six main stage productions are offered each year-one for first-year and transfer students only-as well as dance concerts. Productions may be held in the 1,200-seat historic Lucas Theatre for the Arts; the 1,100-seat Trustees Theater; the 400-seat Arnold Hall auditorium; the 150-seat black box Mondanaro Theater in Crites Hall; or the 90-seat Afifi Amphitheater at the Pei Ling Chan Garden for the Arts. Performing arts students participate in original plays, new interpretations of classical and modern plays, musicals, dance concerts, an improvisation group, senior projects and M.F.A. thesis shows. Professors with backgrounds as award-winning actors, writers and directors share their experiences and are committed to preparing the next generation of performing arts professionals. The performing arts department offers an in-house casting office and schedules private on-campus auditions with casting agents and producers throughout the year. Undergraduate and graduate students have the opportunity to travel to Atlanta and New York for auditions with industry agents. M.F.A. students pursue advanced studies in acting, movement, voice-over production, dramatic theory and promotion, and are prepared to enter the workforce with valuable connections, knowledge and on-camera experience.
