Program Overview

Program Description:
The SCAD industrial design program is one of the fastest growing in the United States, with a large full-time faculty and a spacious, well-equipped facility. The curriculum and instruction develop highly motivated visionary students of design who create, articulate and communicate innovative solutions that improve people’s lives. Through theory, practice and reflection, students develop original methodologies focused on cognitive thinking, design inquiry and creative problem-solving. Coursework parallels professional practice, involving actual clients from consumer electronics, communications and entertainment, housewares, interaction, marine, lawn and garden, toys, transportation and more. The Gulfstream Center for Industrial and Furniture Design in Savannah is a 44,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility with studios, labs and workshops, high-end computer labs and the latest industry software, including Autodesk Studio, Adobe CS5 Master Collection, Rhino 3-D, SolidWorks and Autodesk Maya. Seven 3-D printers allow students to print ABS and polycarbonate models of their computer-generated designs, and two laser cutters enable them to transfer their digital designs to plastic, wood or metal. In a nearly 10,000-square-foot model shop, students work with wood, metal, plastics and composites to visualize their design solutions. They also have access to a three-axis computer numerically controlled vertical milling machine and a large envelope five-axis CNC router.
