Program Description:

SFAI’s graduate programs challenge students to engage in the critical thinking, discourse, in-depth theory, and practice that are essential for engaging with and understanding contemporary art and global society. The School of Studio Practice offers exceptional MFA, Low-Residency MFA, and Post-Baccalaureate programs in Design and Technology, Film, New Genres, Painting, Photography, Print Making and Sculpture. These programs focus on independent studio practice and challenge students to broaden and advance the conceptual, historical, and practical knowledge needed to sustain a contemporary studio, surpass and transform previous work and ideas, and break through to something truly new. The Low-Residency MFA program is designed for those students who choose an alternative academic schedule. The Post-Baccalaureate program is excellent for students who want to better prepare for entrance to an MFA program or for those who want to enhance skills and knowledge without plans to enter an MFA program. The School of Interdisciplinary Studies includes MA programs in History and Theory of Contemporary Art, Urban Studies, and Exhibition and Museum Studies. In these distinctive programs, students are trained to be challenging thinkers, affording the ability to imagine a myriad of solutions that are applicable in a variety of fields. The MA in Urban Studies combines the resources of both Studio and Interdisciplinary Studies, permitting an in-depth study of urban forms and habitat. Exhibition and Museum Studies considers the understanding that museums and exhibitions are both historical objects and subjects, while History and Theory of Contemporary Art addresses complex issues such as the dismantling of the hierarchies of artistic mediums, the globalization of culture, the intersection of Western and non-western modernity, and the question of authorship in the practice of contemporary art. Requirements:

"The MFA admissions process is highly selective and may involve a personal interview for those candidates who have been recommended as finalists for admission consideration. Decisions for admission are based on evidence of a highly accomplished portfolio of artwork, a clearly written, well-developed artist statement that addresses the artwork in the portfolio, and evidence of success in academic and studio coursework at the undergraduate level. MA applicants are required to submit a writing sample, and applicants will be judged on the quality of academic work, achievements, community or leadership involvement, and writing. MA applicants may optionally submit additional writing samples and/or a portfolio of art work. "

International Requirements:

SFAI’s rigorous MFA program demands sufficient mastery of English reading, writing and verbal skills. If English is not your first language, you will also be required to submit a qualifying TOEFL or academic IELTS score. Minimum required TOEFL is 92 (internet-based) or 237 (computer-based) or 580 (paper based). Minimim required academic IELTS band score of 7 is required.
