Program Overview

Program Description:
The Biomedical Sciences program is designed as a full or part-time evening program for the student seeking an advanced degree in preparation for professional school (medical, dental, or veterinary) or related allied health careers, working professional or science educator. The Master of Biomedical Sciences (MBS) program prepares you for careers in medicine, research or biotechnology and can usually be completed in two years or less. Thesis Master’s students have a research focus where practical laboratory experience is a critical component. The non-thesis program prepares students whose goal is medical or other health professional education. RowanGSBS students work closely with the medical students on campus. In fact, students in our MBS program can take two courses at RowanSOM, an important opportunity if you, like many MBS students, have medical school – or another professional school – in your career sights. The Biomedical Science program (30 credits) has specified program requirements but is flexible in order to accommodate the diverse needs and interests of the students. The core courses (12 credits) of the program include courses in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Systems Biology, and a Seminar in Biomedical Sciences. The student then may choose 18 credits of electives in pharmacology, anatomy, physiology, microbiology, neuroscience and related areas. The program includes an option for laboratory experience and a research thesis, if the student is interested in a research-based Masters degree. Students earning the MS typically complete the program in 3-4 semesters (1.5-2 years) but have up to four years to complete the program. The MS degree is awarded on the basis of achievement in a wide range of course work; a comprehensive qualifying examination evaluating the breadth of background knowledge and the ability for independent thinking; intensive research experience during which the candidate demonstrates ability to initiate, perform, and analyze original experimental work; a written dissertation; and a public defense of the dissertation through a final oral examination. The Certificate program (18 credits) includes the required courses in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, and Systems Biology, and can be completed in one year if the student first enrolls in the fall semester. Last, the RowanGSBS has 2 dual degree programs with Rutgers University School of Public Health. The MBS/MPH and MS/MPH dual degree programs are designed to allow students to explore opportunities in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical industries, and/or public health sectors along with employees in health related research fields who want to gain expertise in the biomedical sciences and health systems and policies. These 57 credit dual degree programs are designed to be completed in 2 years including summers.
