Program Overview

Program Description:

The two-year, full-time MA in Forensic Mental Health Counseling program is designed to prepare students to become master’s level clinicians to provide mental health services in forensic or legal settings. The Program also provides the appropriate foundation for future doctoral study in a Psy.D. program. Rooted in clinical practice, this program provides students with more than 200 hours of practicum work and 600 hours of internship experience to help students toward completing the necessary requirements to obtain licensure as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) or similar credential. Students focus on mental health diagnosis; treatment planning; psychological testing; individual and group therapy; clinical assessment; and intervention with forensic populations.

Students in the MA in Forensic Mental Health Counseling degree program at RWU are trained to expertly administer and interpret psychological tests; conduct and document clinical interviews and mental status examinations, and compile complete client social histories. In addition, students are able to provide an initial case conceptualization with a case write-up and proposed treatment plan. Graduates emerge with the skills toconduct individual and group therapy with multiple populations and provide psycho-educational services.

Applicants should have an undergraduate degree in psychology, criminal justice, or a related field.
