Program Overview

Program Description:
Research is carried out in a variety of areas and with a diversity of approaches. The Department’s staff are well qualified and experienced and have expertise in a wide range of biological areas from molecular biology to animal behaviour, the study of health from physiological, psychological and sociological perspectives, nutrition, environmental science and geography. Staff in the Department are engaged in collaborative work with researchers both within the University and at other institutions and organisations including Oxford University, the University of Surrey, the University of East Anglia, Queen Mary and Westfield College, the German Primate Centre, Göttingen, Griffith University, Brisbane, the University of Virginia and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zürich. Staff have written and edited major books and regularly publish research and present papers at conferences, both in the UK and abroad. The Department offers research students a formal programme of support in research methods, laboratory and field techniques, computing and numerical methods which can be tailored to meet individual needs. Training includes laboratory procedures, fieldwork, analytical techniques, research design, the use of information technology, and the writing and presentation of theses and other results. Fieldwork takes place both locally and further afield – e.g. Barn Elms Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust, Brazil, Nigeria and Alaska. Research students are invited to attend a regular programme of workshops, research seminars and research cluster meetings. The research cluster activities encourage the sharing of ideas and support research students. Research students also benefit from Roehampton’s excellent facilities. These include the Library, laboratory facilities and computer support. In addition, students benefit from the collaborative arrangements that exist with numerous scientific establishments with research facilities throughout London.
