Effective use of intellectual capital is vital for maximising efficiency and competitiveness. Knowledge management is a set of processes that seeks to enable organisations to make best use of intellectual capital, and is a vital tool in organisational development. Knowledge management tools and processes identify and capture knowledge from individuals within the organisation or from its partners or the public domain, and are used to develop methods to share knowledge within formal/informal groups and networks. For this it uses a number of techniques such as knowledge mapping and information systems audits in examining how knowledge and learning are communicated.
