Program Description:

The School of Information curriculum is designed to support our dynamic programs and to keep current and on the cutting-edge of developments in the information professions.

While the core competencies represent the foundational knowledge of the LIS field, special-topics courses respond to new developments and research in information science and technology. Elective course offerings provide breadth and depth to the curriculum across many areas of specialization. 

Students interested in carrying out a special research project under the direction of faculty may choose to take the independent study course. Four core required courses (12 credits: LIS 651 Information Profession, LIS 652 Information Services and Resources, LIS 653 Knowledge Organization, and LIS 654 Information Technology) and eight elective courses (24 credits) make up the 36 credit M.S.L.I.S. degree. A maximum of six credits from an ALA accredited LIS graduate program may be transferred to the School of Information. Students entering with a master’s degree may reduce their required credits for the M.S.L.I.S. to 30 credits.

Many School of Information classes are held in New York's world-class libraries, museums, and archives where students also do internships, carry out research, and have guided visits. 

Degree Requirements
Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university representing sound, basic training in the humanities, social sciences, or sciences. Each must have a superior scholastic record or otherwise give evidence of ability to perform work on the graduate level. Applicants are expected to offer evidence of maturity and leadership potential for the profession. Applicants will be contacted by the library school if an interview is deemed necessary. When candidates live a distance from New York and a personal interview is not feasible, additional references in support of their applications may be required. The school may request that applicants take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) when it is judged from a review of the application that there is some question as to academic ability. School of Information students may take no more than a total of 6 credits as non-matriculated (non-degree) students. All non-matriculated students must obtain written permission from the School of Information. International students whose first language is not English must submit the TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE. The minimum required TOEFL score is 82 (Internet). The minimum required IELTS is 6.5, and the minimum required PTE score is 53. Students who are not international but whose first language is not English must submit the GRE, TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE. Students may continue to apply after the January 5 deadline until the department is full.
