Pratt’s M.F.A. program in Fine Arts immerses students in the world of contemporary art supported by a faculty of working artists and community of peers, enriched by the abundance and inspiration of New York.

The four semester, 60-credit curriculum is both rigorous and flexible allowing wide latitude for interdisciplinary exploration among the department’s five areas: painting and drawing; photography; sculpture; printmaking; and integrated practices (installation, public art, performance). Students have individual studios and access to a full range of labs, shops and studios. There are many opportunities for individual studio visits with guest artists and critics and students may publicly exhibit their work in campus galleries and during Open Studios.

Second-year students mount individual thesis exhibitions and have the opportunity to participate in a curated show at a New York gallery. Faculty members are distinguished artists with international reputations and have received awards from the Guggenheim Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, New York Foundation for the Arts, Tiffany Foundation, Joan Mitchell Foundation, Skowhegan, Creative Capital, Art Matters and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. Fine Arts alumni continue to make their mark nationally and internationally as artists, educators and leaders.

M.F.A. Painting and Drawing
Pratt Institute’s M.F.A. Painting and Drawing Curriculum offers students a broad but rigorous studio practice, highlighting students’ individual development and focusing on an understanding of the significant concerns that constitute contemporary art today. From critical analysis to furthering and refining material knowledge, each student will engage in an intense studio experience, strengthening their skills and broadening their knowledge of historical, social, and critical issues through seminars, group critiques, and peer interactions. The two-year program culminates in a written thesis and solo thesis exhibition that prepares graduates to join the art world as professionals.

M.F.A. Photography
The Photography Curriculum is designed to encourage a wide variety of cross- disciplinary study. We expect that this broad based education will arm our students to effect change in the world with the art they create during their time at Pratt and beyond. The Faculty generously invest themselves in an intergenerational dialogue that is unique to New York. All practicing artists, writers or critics, they bring with them conceptual rigor and a respect for the achievement of craft employed in their own practices. In addition, visiting artists, curators, critics, and arts professionals lecture and conduct studio visits.

M.F.A. Sculpture
The Sculpture Curriculum encourages experimentation and cross-disciplinary exploration of 3D and 4D thinking and making. Diverse approaches draw on traditional and cutting edge concepts and encompass a full spectrum of techniques.

M.F.A. Printmaking
Our Printmaking curriculum is rooted in how the print, from its earliest form, has been a way to document, communicate, and disperse information both written and visual. The Printmaking Concentration at Pratt Institute promotes the exploration of visual representation through the medium of print as a primary art form. The program’s structure is based in the traditional mediums of relief, intaglio, lithography, and silkscreen while encouraging the use of photo processes, digital, and alternative methods. The studio courses foster imaginative approaches in addressing formal, technical, and conceptual creative problems.

M.F.A. Integrated Practices
The Integrated Practices curriculum fosters an interdisciplinary approach to creative inquiry, studio, and post-studio practice that provides space for investigating emerging and unconventional forms of visual and conceptual expression. Students will be challenged to work across multiple disciplines and fields of knowledge, both visual and non-visual. They will gain experience working within different systems of inquiry simultaneously, reflecting the reality of art practices today. Integrated Practices catalyze social exchange through interactive media such as performance, installation, video / film, sound, computer / web based media, site-specific and research driven processes, and collaborative or community oriented projects.
