- The MRes in Digital Art and Technology operates within the research context of AZTEC (Art, Science, Technology Research consortium, that includes the Planetary Collegium). The programme builds on the strong foundations provided by the BA/BSc (Hons) Digital Art & Technology Programme (B-DAT) and provides connections to the PhD programmes of study and the activities of Research Groups in the Centre for Media Art & Design Research in the School of Art & Media. That the programme is available as arts-science-research awards reflects our trans-disciplinary ambitions across the fields of art and technology. The hybrid approach is underpinned by a historical and critical tradition that regards cultural and technological processes as inextricably linked. Adopting this position in relation to emergent and transformational practices allows the programme to respond critically to changes in the mode of production, as well as the pervasive influence of networked informational communications, bio/nano-technologies, artificial intelligence, robotics and neural networks. Modules are delivered through workshops and symposium sessions in our digital media studios and at external venues, supported by interactive online technologies. Consequently, you can be based in remote locations or in Plymouth itself, whilst retaining employment and other professional relationships. The programme consists of the following three modules: • IDAT514 - Synthesis (Credits 30, Coursework 100%) - Cultivates the principle of critical practice, the module forms part of the research and development stage for the final project, in preparation for the choice of the arts or science route. • IDAT515 - Invisible Architecture (Credits 30, Coursework 100%) - Using a variety of development tools, diverse models of space are investigated in order to generate work that explores new digital architectures. Issues surrounding 'virtual’, ‘networked’ and ‘augmented’ environments are placed within a critical context. • IDAT510 Project (Credits 120, Coursework 100%) - Negotiated through close liaison with two allocated supervisors and developed from a student’s particular concerns towards the MRes award, the project combines an ambitious creative and experimental production alongside a dissertation/report. This major project allows you to build and define your own digital and post-digital practice. Synthesis (IDAT514) and Invisible Architecture (IDAT515) are taught modules that lay the foundations for the themes encountered in the programme as a whole as well as equiping students with critical and practical skills and strategies for producing innovative work. The Project (IDAT510) provides students with the opportunity to extend their knowledge, understanding and production skills in order that they may better explore transformative aspects of digital media. The programme is modular, allowing both part-time and full-time modes of study. Full-time study involves undertaking the taught modules and research project in parallel over the course of a single year. Part-time mode allows a student to take the taught modules first, followed by the research project, over a total duration of two years. At the Project stage, students can choose different proportions of practical and written work: 25% written report or dissertation with 75% production project 50% written report or dissertation with 50% production project 75% written report or dissertation with 25% production project These proportions are in recognition that production work as well as written forms can constitute research activity.
