Program Overview

Program Description:
This research doctorate programme offers British Psychological Society accredited professional training leading to Chartered Clinical Psychologist status. The doctorate is a funded full-time three-year programme of study. We enjoy excellent relationships with local services in the South West; colleagues are very committed to supporting training and offer a wide range of placements. The programme specialises in: • life cycle perspective within a social constructionist and community psychology context • understanding the person in context which includes considerations of adversity, risk and resilience in life • models of therapy including systemic/family therapy, psychodynamic, CBT and social constructionist perspectives. The programme has been running since 1982 and was one of the first to award the doctorate in clinical psychology. It is also recognised as a research degree by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). The programme includes: • a Foundation Level Family Therapy course in the first year that is independently accredited by the Association of Family Therapy • multi-level assessment, formulation and assessment of clinical problems leading to a model of integrative practice • conceptual and practical inclusion of reflective practice throughout all three components, clinical, academic and research, of the programme • competency-based approach to clinical practice, including therapy, supervision, consultation and leadership roles • critical appraisal of the professional role of clinical psychologists • acquisition of a sound value base for working with service users in an ethical, collaborative, safe and effective manner • personal and professional development to ensure reflective and ethical practice and adherence to the requirements of the regulating and advisory professional bodies (Health and Care Professions Council and British Psychological Society).
