- Awareness of an urgent need to advance counselor education and training around the world is growing. To help to improve the quality and quantity of counselors in China, Palo Alto University (PAU) has established its China Program in Mental Health Counseling. A Master’s degree program in Counseling offers students a systematic distance learning curriculum that has been carefully designed to meet the highest international standards for counselor education. In 3 years, our Master’s degree students will gain the breadth and depth of knowledge they need to practice counseling in an ethical, competent way. Students who are enrolled in China will be encouraged to discuss practical ways to apply what is learned to the Chinese context. The program culminates in supervised field practice that meets international standards of excellence (see www.cacrep.org), with methods of training that include modeling, demonstration, discussion of video- or audio-recorded clinical work, and regular group and individualized supervision.
