Program Description:

The Department of Political Science is privileged to offer a graduate program designed to prepare students for careers in academia, providing a strong methodological foundation in statistical literacy, theoretical reasoning, and critical thinking as well as careers in state, local, and federal government, public service, international affairs, and other interesting professional paths. The M.A program is tailored to develop substantive knowledge about politics and society in our students, and to train them in the cognitive skills necessary to understand and analyze political phenomena. Our primary focus is to prepare our graduate students with the substantive depth and research skills for entry into Ph.D. programs and academic careers. Additionally, we seek to prepare our students with the advanced substantive mastery, as well as research, critical, analytical, and communication skills for successful careers in politics and government, public administration, law, business, education, community service, survey research, and journalism. Our graduates often go on to Ph.D. programs and are lobbyists, congressional staffers, city managers attorneys, and public program managers. Since the graduate program in Political Science was established in 1946, it has awarded M.A. degrees to hundreds of students from more than a dozen countries. Our program offers funding to support your graduate studies, and a mentoring program with our best faculty. As a Mater student at OSU you may have the opportunity to teach Introduction to American Government as part of a group of instructors dedicated to instilling a greater sense of citizenship and a more enthusiastic understanding of American political processes. Consider also the possibilities of conducting research with department faculty members. Assistantships such as these are great opportunities.

Accreditation:

Oklahoma State University will utilize a new and transformed model for maintaining institutional accreditation, the Open Pathway. The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association, referred to as the HLC, is replacing the Program to Evaluate and Advance Quality with two new Pathways, the Standard Pathway and the Open Pathway. OSU has been approved to adopt the highest accreditation standard represented by the Open Pathway.

In order to complete your application for admission, you will need to submit scanned copies of the following materials: 1) all official undergraduate transcripts, 2) a 1-2 page personal statement that outlines why you are interested in the program and what you hope to achieve with the help of a Master of Arts degree in political science, 3) GRE scores. During the application process, you will also be asked for the email addresses of three individuals willing to write you a letter of recommendation, with preference given to faculty who are familiar with your academic work and record.

International Requirements:

International students may need to submit TOEFL scores, and other materials as required by the Oklahoma State Graduate College. This information can be found on the Graduate College website gradcollege.okstate.edu
