Program Overview

Program Description:
Thanks to the College’s unique partnership with the Oberlin Public Schools, you will be immersed in the daily life of the public schools through a school-based internship. You will work with mentor teachers in Oberlin Public School classrooms and become an integral part of students’ lives for an entire academic year. Mentor teachers will provide models of how theory and pedagogical skills translate into sound classroom practice while guiding teacher candidates as they study, observe, and gradually take on responsibility for classroom teaching. Very few programs can provide this type of immersion training, which prepares teacher candidates to meet the wide variety of challenges that may arise during their first years of teaching. It is estimated that over the next ten years the nation will need more than two million teachers, with the greatest needs in urban and rural communities. Due to the unique characteristics of the town of Oberlin, the Oberlin Public School system blends the diversity of an urban center with the life of a small town. Students of different races and ethnicities, with varying family incomes and support systems, make up a school population that represents both urban and rural communities. Join members of Oberlin’s renowned College faculty and Oberlin K-12 public school teachers for an intensive and creative year of graduate study and school-based internship. The program begins in June 2008.
