Program Description:

The Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) degree provides initial teacher certification in a content area and a Master's degree. The M.A.T. may be earned as part of the Practitioner Teacher Program (PREP) or the Professional Studies Program. Practitioner Teacher Program: Preparing Responsive Educators Program (PREP). This program is designed for those teaching in Louisiana schools. Certifications are available in Elementary Education, Grades 1-5 (506B); Middle School Education, Grades 4-8 (507B); and Secondary Education, Grades 6-12 (508B). PREP applicants must have a “letter of intent to employ” from a school district and must meet all admission requirements for NSU's Graduate School . Professional Studies Program This is a traditional alternative certification program that allows candidates to “pace” teacher certification and graduate coursework in Early Childhood Education, Pre-K-Grade 3 (548); Elementary Education, Grades 1-5 (506A); Middle School Education, Grades 4-8 (507A); Secondary Education, Grades 6-12 (508A); and Mild/Moderate Special Education (518A). Professional studies applicants are not required to have a “letter of intent to employ” with a school district, but must meet all admission requirements for NSU's Graduate School.

Requirements:

1. Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a minimum grade point average of 2.0; 2. Application on file prior to registration; 3. Official transcripts on file prior to registration; 4. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores with a minimum of 750 on verbal plus quantitative sections; 5. Two letters of recommendation. All graduate students must furnish official transcripts from each college or university attended. All students applying for entry or re-entry to graduate study at Northwestern must be eligible to return to their former institutions to be considered for admission to Northwestern. No credit will be granted to a student by Northwestern for work done while suspended or dismissed from any institution. Northwestern does not award graduate credits for portfolio-based experiential learning.

International Requirements:

Admission for International Students To be admitted for graduate study, international students must present to Northwestern State University an evaluation of their educational credentials by a United States professional evaluating service that has been approved by the university. International students must also meet all requirements for admission to the Graduate School. In addition, other documents required are: official TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) scores (minimum score of 500 paper and 173 computer), an official Financial Statement Certification verifying bank funds available in U.S. dollars, an Educational Experience by Years list, a Health Form, and Immunization Record. All admission records must be on file at least 30 days prior to the date of registration. International students are only admitted on a conditional basis for the first 12 hours (see conditional admission).
