Program Description:
The first Masters degree of its kind in the North East of England, the MA in Creative Writing is a challenging postgraduate programme which offers the student the opportunity to explore various aspects of new writing, including prose and writing for performance. This is a practical degree, designed for people who wish to become published creative writers, as well as for those involved in teaching creative writing, or in other areas of the writing industry. WHAT YOU WILL STUDY The MA Creative Writing offers you the opportunity for either full- or part-time study on a taught course of one or two years. It provides workshops taught by experienced creative writers; mixes workshops that produce pieces of writing with others, involving discussion of technique; offers tutorials to discuss work with experienced writers; includes group critiquing and editing sessions; assesses you by your own writing, not by academic essay; gives you the opportunity to mix with other writers and become involved in the writing community of the North East. CAREERS What makes this degree so unique is its flexibility across genres, giving the students skills in a number of areas. The writing workshops are taught by experienced creative writers and make up the backbone of the degree. During some workshops students might produce a piece of creative writing, while other workshops (critiquing sessions) involve discussions of work in progress by members of the group. Students also have regular one-to-one tutorials with staff members. Students graduate with: * the ability to think critically, exercise independent judgement and evaluate pieces of writing. * the ability to complete creative work to a professional standard. * knowledge of how to seek publication informed awareness of how to make a living as a freelance writer. Graduates work in many areas of the writing industry, teach creative writing or become published creative writers.
