Program Description:

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program is open to individuals with a B.A. in a field other than teaching and who want to be K-8 teachers. Students who complete the MAT program earn K-9 licensure, a Masters degree, and middle school endorsement. The MAT program is designed for our students to develop the craft, knowledge, and skills to be successful, creative, caring, and critical teachers for the 21st century. Clinical & Student Teaching MAT students do a total of 200 clinical teaching hours prior to student teaching. In Terms 2 and 3 students have 50-hour clinicals in K-5 classrooms; in Term 5 students are with a middle grade team for a 100-hour clinical. Student teaching is full-time for 16 weeks. All efforts are made to place MAT students in a grade level range of their interest for student teaching (K-2, 3-5, or 6-8). Applicants to the MAT ELED/MS program must meet the admission requirements of the College of Graduate Studies and Research. In addition candidates must provide evidence of: • College transcripts • 2 letters of professional recommendation • MAT program application & writing sample • Passing score on the Illinois State Test of Academic Proficiency
