Program Description:

The Master of Science in Applied Mathematics is designed for those with a strong undergraduate background in mathematics who wish to better prepare themselves for careers in applied mathematics or college teaching of mathematics. We constantly examine our curriculum to make our course offering better connected with the job market requirements. The program is designed so that the student can concentrate in the areas of Applied Mathematics, Statistics, and Operational Research. Math 430 Discrete Mathematical Structures Math* 495 Project in Mathematics Eight* elective courses in which three may be 300 level courses approved by the advisor………………24 cr. The full description of program requirements and all the courses can be found in the department’s brochure and in the NEIU Catalog. As a part of the degree, students will prepare a thesis or a written project for credit. A formal presentation of the paper is required. Students must also pass a comprehensive examination covering selected areas. *If a student elects to prepare a thesis, then they will register for thesis credit as approved by the advisor. The thesis option requires only seven elective courses are required and MATH 494 replaces MATH 495.

Requirements:

Applicants must meet the general requirements for admission to the College of Graduate Studies and Research. Students must have six undergraduate courses in mathematics after calculus. A student with four or five courses after calculus may be admitted conditionally. Students who are less well prepared must complete additional course work before applying to the program.
