The Department of Counselor Education offers two program options leading to the Master of Arts in Counseling: School Counseling: (1) a 48 credit hour program (16 courses) for licensed teachers and (2) a 60 credit hour program (20 courses) for individuals without a teacher license. The School Counseling program prepares one for employment as a school counselor in elementary, middle, and high schools. Graduates of the School Counseling program meet the educational requirements for the Illinois Professional Educator License as a School Counselor. Also, graduates can meet the educational requirements to be licensed as a professional counselor in Illinois (LPC/LCPC). Counselor Education also offers an endorsement only option leading to licensure as a school counselor for individuals with an advanced degree in counseling or related fields.

Applicants must meet the general requirements for admission to the College of Graduate Studies and Research. Applicants are also required to fulfill the following additional requirements:
1. Submit recent scores for the general test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Scores will be considered along with other aspects of the application;
2. Satisfy supplementary admission requirements as specified by each sequence
3. Participate in an evaluative Pre-admission Workshop after application materials have been submitted.
