Program Description:

The Department of Counselor Education offers a 60-hour program (20 courses) leading to the Master of Arts in Family Counseling. The program leads to licensure in Illinois for LCPC and LMFT. Family counselors work with individuals, families, and couples in Community Mental Health Centers, Businesses, Hospitals, private practices, university and research centers, and in prisons. Family counselors treat a variety of problems such as marital problems, individual problems, child-parent problems, and problems such as depression and anxiety. Family counselors look at the impact that a family can have on an individual, and may look to the family as part of a treatment plan. Careers • Families facing severe mental illnesses and emotional disorders, such as schizophrenia, depression and anorexia/bulimia • Counselor for couples in crisis • Family Counseling with Substance Abusing Teenagers • Families with children in the foster care system • Medical Family Therapist • Juvenile Offenders • Families with children with ADHD, anxiety or depression Family Counseling requires a minimum of 60 credit hours, or 20 courses. Requirements:

Applicants to the M.A. in Family Counseling program must meet the admission requirements of the College of Graduate Studies and Research and the following additional requirements: 1. Submit recent scores for the general test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Scores will be considered along with other aspects of the application; 2. Participate in an evaluative Pre-admission Workshop after application materials have been submitted. The Department of Counselor Education admits students twice a year, in the spring and fall terms. Admission to the program is competitive. It is possible for an otherwise acceptable applicant to be denied admission due to the competitive strength of the applicant pool.
