Program Overview

Program Description:
This programme aims: to develop and apply advanced analytical skills; implement and draft design codes; apply advanced materials and construction techniques; rationalise the conflicting requirements of environment, professional standards and commercial pressures; devise and appraise new methods and procedures for the realisation and financing of construction projects; understand and assess the impact of quality assurance, design and management regulations.
For the MSc you take compulsory modules (60 credits), optional modules (40 credits), followed by a research project written up as a research project written up as a dissertation (80 credits). For the Diploma you take compulsory modules (60 credits), optional modules (20 credits) and undertake a 40-credit project and dissertation.
Compulsory modules include: design of building systems; construction management; structural risk, reliability and sustainability; project management; research methods. Optional modules include: structural dynamics; finite element theory in structural mechanics; advanced structural materials; specialist structures; seismic resistant design; soil modelling and numerical methods.
Teaching methods include: formal lectures; tutorials; seminars; open learning; group projects; computing workshops; laboratory and fieldwork; site visits. Assessment is by formal written examinations, course work, a dissertation, and oral and poster presentations.
