Program Overview

Program Description:
The MLitt incorporates a formal research training component where you will develop your research skills and methodologies (20 credits). You also complete a number of detailed research assignments chosen according to your interests and experience (80 credits), and undertake a dissertation of 16,000–24,000 words consisting of a sustained piece of original research (80 credits). Study consists mainly of seminars, tutorials and independent learning supported by research training. Dissertation supervision is available in the following areas: syntax; phonology; semantics; pragmatics; sociolinguistics; L1 and L2 acquisition; the evolution of language; history of English; English dialects; World Englishes; English place names. You may also attend lectures and seminars for approved taught undergraduate and postgraduate modules (without assessment).

Requirements:
A good undergraduate degree, or equivalent. Previous study of linguistics or English language is not necessary. Applicants should demonstrate a genuine interest in the scientific study of language and or its acquisition and use.
International Requirements:
Applicants whose first language is not English are required to hold IELTS 7.0, TOEFL 600 (paper-based) or 250 (computer-based), or equivalent. Our INTO Newcastle University Centre can provide extra tuition to help you meet the University's English language requirements.
