Program Description:
This course addresses the key concepts and debates about the relationship between the media and society. It focuses on the social, cultural, economic and technological processes and practices of the media and, through the optional module choice, you can acquire some of the practical skills of public relations and journalism or examine media theory. This is an academic Master's programme rather than a training course but it contains a substantial vocational element, which is taught by industry professionals and is designed to enhance employment opportunities in media industries.


You take four compulsory modules (80 credits): media analysis; methodologies - researching media, culture and society; media and law; and writing for the media. You also choose two optional modules (40 credits) from a selection which includes: news and journalism - critical studies; professional sub-editing; globalisation and national culture; television studies; broadcasting and audience studies; visual culture; public affairs and responsibility; advertising and consumption; communication, emotion and psychoanalysis; science communication; social psychology of communication; sex, sexuality and desire.


The dissertation (60 credits) enables you to undertake independent research into a theme or issue relating to journalism.
