Program Overview

Program Description:
The MA in Film aims to develop in students a sophisticated understanding of films as systems of meaning. Compulsory modules advance students’ knowledge of the musculature of cinematography and editing and the nerve system of narrative conventions, authorship, genre, power, aesthetics, stardom and nationality. In optional modules students specialise in these areas of film theory or in film practice, including screenwriting, filmmaking and cinema management. Students develop their own scholarly approaches to film through exploring a range of positions in film studies and a range of historical periods and national/ transnational cinemas. The programme culminates in a dissertation in the form of either a 15,000-18,000-word exploration of a chosen topic or a short film accompanied by a critical analysis. By the end of the programme all students will have acquired knowledge of a range of analytical and theoretical principles in film studies and an array of national/transnational cinemas (British, Chinese, French, American, North African, Spanish & Latin American), and those students specialising in film practice will have either explored the complexity of designing and executing complex visual narrative or the demands of a modern commercial cinema. Whether you are looking to advance skills developed at undergraduate level, develop the skills needed to pursue a career in the creative industries, or establish the foundations for a PhD in film, the MA in Film will challenge and engage you in developing insights into film as a crux of modern life and media.
