Program Overview

Program Description:
The MA in Linguistics has three specialist pathways, leading to different awards: MA Linguistics: English Language MA Linguistics: Language Acquisition MA Linguistics: European Languages The pathways have a shared compulsory taught module in research methods in language and linguistics (20 credits). You also take a 60-credit dissertation and one of the following 20-credit modules/ module combinations: English sentence structure (10 credits) and phonetics and phonology (10 credits); generative syntax; issues in syntax; introduction to cross-linguistic syntax; issues in phonological theory I; issues in phonological theory II. For the English Language pathway you take 40 credits from the following compulsory modules (all 20 credits): lexical innovation; computational linguistics; the sociolinguistics of language and society; issues in variation and change in the British Isles; the linguistic analysis of early modern English; and the social history of English. For the Language Acquisition pathway you take 60 credits from the following compulsory modules (all 20 credits): core issues in SLA; child language; and introduction to psycholinguistics. For the English Languages pathway you take 20 credits from the following compulsory modules (all 20 credits): German and English word analysis; semantic change in French; and syntax and history of Spanish. During 12-week semesters, the programme involves lectures, seminars, field work, talks by invited international specialists and individual meetings with staff. The summer is spent working with a supervisor on a 15,000 – 18,000-word dissertation.

Requirements:
A good undergraduate degree, or equivalent. Previous study of linguistics or English language is not necessary. Applicants should demonstrate a genuine interest in the scientific study of language and or its acquisition and use.
International Requirements:
Applicants whose first language is not English are required to hold IELTS 7.0, TOEFL 600 (paper-based) or 250 (computer-based), or equivalent.
