Program Overview

Program Description:
The programme aims to provide dental practitioners with: a systematic understanding of the theoretical principles that underpin conscious sedation and anxiety management in dentistry; a comprehensive practical understanding of clinical skills in techniques of intravenous and inhalational conscious sedation, as applicable to UK practice in dentistry; an ability to critically evaluate the evidence-base and clinical issues involved in the safe independent practice of conscious sedation to the highest standard.
The Diploma has been designed in response to the increasing use of conscious sedation in dentistry and a demand by practitioners for formal training, which is directly applicable to their own clinical practice. Application for the 10 available places is by open competition, advertised in the British Dental Journal.
The Diploma comprises taught modules: basic sciences and pharmacology; anxiety and pain; intravenous sedation; inhalational sedation; sedation patient care; medical emergencies. Teaching is through lectures, seminars and hands-on clinical training in intravenous and inhalational sedation techniques. You are expected to undertake substantive self-directed study, including five written assignments (2,000 words each), an oral presentation and a research or audit project leading to the production of a 10,000-word dissertation. The Diploma is awarded after satisfactory completion of a final examination at the end of the programme.
