Program Description:

This programme – the only MA in British History in the UK – provides you with the opportunity to study the history of the British Isles – in Britain. The programme, run by experts in the field, is suitable for students intending to go on to study for a PhD, those wishing to improve their skills through study and research in history, and for those with a particular interest in British history combined with the chance to explore the country.

You take compulsory modules in: the practice of history, a ‘pathway’ in British history, and research training.  Then there are optional modules from a list including women and gender in Britain, 1650-1800; death and burial cultures in Britain, 1550-1800; Thatcherism; making Ireland British? Ireland under the Act of Union; Welsh-English political and cultural interactions, 800-1066; Medical and social responses to madness and mental disabilities, 1650-1850; Love on the dole: a cultural history of unemployment in the 1930s. Finally, you write a dissertation on any period of British history of your choice.

The taught modules are delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, individual tutorials and self-directed learning. For the dissertation, you conduct your own research and are supervised by a member of staff.
