Program Overview
- Program Description:
Our highly personalized graduate program prepares you to be a responsive, effective advocate for the academic, social, emotional, and career success of pre-K, elementary, and middle and high school students. Complete the program in two years full-time or in three years on a part-time basis, in a blended format (online and on campus) and in the field.
Coursework topics include counseling theory and techniques, working in schools, leadership, group counseling, working with special needs students, post-secondary planning and college counseling, consultation, human development, social justice, ethics, and school violence prevention. In our Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP)-accredited program, you will participate in practicum and internships under the mentorship and supervision of a tenured school counselor in a P-12 school setting. Upon completing your studies, you will possess these core competencies:
- Knowledge and skills to plan, implement, and evaluate comprehensive school counseling programs using national and state models.
- Knowledge and skills to consult and work collaboratively with faculty members, administrators, parents and caretakers, and community members to improve student success.
- Ability to apply counseling theories and practices in a school setting.
- Ability to consult and collaborate with faculty members and administrators to create safe, respectful school environments for diverse student populations.
- Ability to use data to inform practice and serve the needs of every student, including underrepresented youth.
- Knowledge and proficiency in a variety of technology applications appropriate to counseling practice.
- Demonstrated responsibility for your own learning and professional development.
