Program Description:

The Department of Psychology offers graduate study leading to the Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Our faculty conducts research on a wide variety of topics within the psychology field including, but not limited to, human-computer interaction, auditory perception, automation, visual perception, language processing, cognitive and perceptual development, motor behavior, cognitive neuroscience, and prospective memory

The MA program is designed to provide graduates with the tools necessary for further training at the doctoral level or for employment in industry or government. Students may also pursue a non-thesis MA in Experimental Psychology. The PhD is offered in the major areas of cognitive, engineering, and social psychology.

Our master’s level graduates have found employment in industry with companies such as IBM. Our PhD graduates have been employed in academia industry, and government agencies. Alumni have found faculty positions at the University of Quebec, Georgia Tech, Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute, University of New Mexico, New Mexico State University, Air Force Academy, University of Arizona, Arizona State University, and the University of Michigan.

International applicants submitting foreign post-secondary level transcripts are required to have their credentials evaluated by a recognized member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES). NMSU requires a comprehensive course by course evaluation. In addition, international students must submit an English language proficiency exam (either TOEFL or IELTS.)
