Program Description:
The Master of Arts in Counseling and Guidance prepares professional counselors to offer individual, family, and group counseling in schools, agencies, hospitals, and private practice. The 60-credit curriculum covers human development; appraisal; diagnosis; treatment planning; individual, family and group counseling; consultation; career/life planning; addictions; research; and professional issues. Specialized training and supervised experience is offered in schools and mental health agencies. The professional counselor program prepares students to pursue licensure as school counselors and clinical mental health counselors in New Mexico. The Ed.S. in Counseling and Guidance provides additional education beyond the M.A. to prepare professionals for licensure as school psychologists in New Mexico. The School Psychology Program prepares persons for positions in public schools and other organizations which require advanced assessment, counseling, consultation and supervision skills. A major research project (thesis) is a degree requirement. The Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology, which is accredited by the American Psychological Association, is based on the scientist-practitioner model through which both research and service delivery skills are acquired. Graduates of the program are prepared to conduct research, provide service, teach, and supervise. Counseling psychology focuses on: (1) fostering of optimal human development; (2) prevention of personal and interpersonal problems; and (3) remediation of existing psychological problems. Emphases in the Counseling Psychology program include cultural diversity, group and family counseling, and counselor training, supervision and consultation. The program prepares students for licensure as psychologists.
