- The Graduate Program in Writing and Consciousness at New College of California was created in 1998 in the heart of the Mission District in San Francisco. Our weekend-based program seeks to offer to the aspiring writer an alternative way of approaching both writing itself and the active consciousness that must be created in anykind of intellectual endeavor. We are not just another creative writing program with a curriculum focused almost exclusively on craft. Our understanding of writing comes from a deeply political belief that the creative act is a way of acquiring awareness of self and world.
