Program Overview

Program Description:
With the Bureau of Labor Statistics (2011) projecting overall HR employment in the Finger Lakes Region to grow 22% by 2018, there’s never been a better time to position Nazareth College’s School of Management as the place to gain relevant skills for professional success. A master’s in Human Resource Development will supplement the programs in Management, Human Resource Management, and Accounting by providing graduates with: • Increased career potential • Enhanced industry mobility • Personal and professional development Changing cultural aspects, and demographics, are also impacting the work force, and the nature of work itself. These changes are permanent. They will impact, permanently, the way work is structured. Employees need to learn new skills and develop new abilities, to respond to these changes in their lives, careers, and organizations. The great places to work, according to Fortune magazine’s ranking each year, understand the need for the ‘perks’ of professional development and career development for their employees. Change can be a competitive advantage for organizations committed to human resource development. The goal of the HRD professional is to: • improve the performance of organizations by maximizing the efficiency and performance of its human capital (organization development interventions and change initiatives are the tools for accomplishing this) • develop knowledge and skills across the employee population (by assessing learning needs and matching appropriate training and skill development to fill this gap) • help create a work environment where job performance and organizational commitment is high (career planning and leadership development are pieces of this) • sustain improvements by engaging others in finding solutions to problems Associations that specialize in human resources offer classes leading to certification for the HRD professional. The American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) offers professional certification in the learning and performance fields. However, an advanced degree is becoming increasingly more important for professionals in this area as they are required to demonstrate a wider range of expertise. This program is intended to enhance the skill set for those in the field, those attempting to enter the field, and those wishing to add certifications to their portfolio.
