Program Description:

The MIPLC provides a truly international and interdisciplinary experience, thanks to its international faculty and students. Our tailored program exclusively designed for and taught to our LL.M. students. Our graduates acquire a globally applicable skill set and an international network of professional and personal contacts. They enjoy excellent career opportunities. Our curriculum is highly comprehensive and multi-jurisdictional. Besides pure IP and competition law, the program also covers economic and business aspects of IP. Students may choose from a large number of courses to focus their studies according to professional and personal preferences. Besides completing a mandatory Basic Module, which covers all areas of IP, and three elective modules, they will write a Master's Thesis on a topic of their choice. Our elective modules include the following: Advanced Patent Law; Advanced Copyright Law; Macro- and Micro-Economic Context; IP Transactions and Enforcement; IP and Technology; Advanced IP and Competition Law. The MIPLC offers a variety of extracurricular activities. Selected students may attend the annual EIPIN Congress and meet participants from the other EIPIN partners. All students may participate in the lectures and seminars held at the MIPLC throughout the year, and in the annual study trip to Washington, DC. An optional internship may be completed during the spring break. Our about 60 active faculty members are highly respected researchers and practitioners from all over the world with a wealth of experience. The majority are tenured professors and researchers, while others work as attorneys for renowned international law firms, as IP officials, as judges, or as practitioners in the world of corporate IP. The MIPLC student body is highly diverse. A typical class holds students from 16-20 countries with degrees and experience in various disciplines. Enrolment is limited to 32 students per year. Comprehensive reading and study materials are provided for each course. Students have full access to the library of the Max Planck Institute for Intellectual Property and Competition Law in Munich. Our dedicated tutors, usually MIPLC graduates, help prepare for exams. Students are provided with personal desks in shared offices as well as internet and database access. The program is managed by a small staff of six who are available to support the students and answer questions. The academic year starts in early October. All instruction takes place in Munich, Germany, Europe's IP Capital. Munich is a safe, clean, and highly livable city. The MIPLC is run jointly by the Max Planck Institute for IP and Competition Law; the University of Augsburg; the Technische Universität München; and The George Washington University Law School (Washington, DC).

Requirements:

Applicants must fulfil the following formal requirements: a) completed university degree (Bachelor's or higher); b) one year of full-time professional experience; c) very good knowledge of English (minimum scores: TOEFL ibT 100 points; IELTS 7.0; Cambridge CPE C). The program is open to graduates of various disciplines, including but not limited to law, engineering, sciences, media studies, etc.

International Requirements:

There are no particular requirements for students from countries other than Germany. German skills are not needed, as the program is taught in English.
