Program Overview

Program Description:
Mount Marty College's Master of Education degree with a concentration on Curriculum and Instruction is a 2-year degree program. It has been specifically and uniquelydesigned with the inservice teacher in mind, giving them the opportunity to complete a degree using their own classrooms. Based on enduring trends and current research, this program focuses on quality and effective teaching, arguably the most important variable affecting student achievement. Utilizing a learning community model of instruction, this program draws from the professional knowledge and experiences of inservice teachers and professors. Through communal classroom experiences involving a confluence of theory and practice, the MEd program aims toward the enhancement of classroom practice. To do this, our program revolves around five core courses and their accompanying supervised practica. Our core courses borrow from the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards, the Danielson Group, InTASC standards, as well as from the MET Project. All of which have been instrumental in molding many states' current policies pertaining to quality and effective teaching. The core courses allow teachers to work with their peers and the professor to develop applicable practices for their classroom. Each course then requires students to complete a practicum proposal which proposes a project to be completed in their own classrooms based on the work and research done in the core course. During the regular school year, inservice teachers will work with a practicum supervisor to implement the proposal toward completing a semester-long action research project.
