Program Overview
- Program Description:
- The Petroleum Engineering master degree program offers drilling, reservoir, and production engineering. Drilling Engineering deals with all aspects of drilling the wellbore, cementing in the casing, and completing the well on land and off shore including directional, horizontal or mulitlateral wells. Reservoir Engineering deals with all aspects of fluid movement within the reservoir, reservoir rock and fluid properties, and the determination of recoverable reserves and optimum production rates. Production Engineering deals primarily with the science of removing fluids from the reservoir to the surface, separating the well stream into oil, gas, and water and then treating the oil and gas into a marketable product. Petroleum Engineering students have the opportunity to join the Society of Petroleum Engineers and enjoy numerous activities on and off campus. One of Montana Tech's recent Petroleum Engineering Master's degree students states: "The Petroleum Master's program at Montana Tech gave me the option to excel in the petroleum field. ...Tech is a great place to get hands-on, practical experience, which is rare at most major universities. The graduate student curriculum is very open, allowing me to tailor my classes to what I find most interesting and helpful to my thesis. They also make it easy to take classes through different departments, like mining and general engineering to broaden and supplement your background. Tech is small, which means that I'm a real person to my professors, rather than just a number or a face. There is also a tremendous amount of support offered for finding jobs and internships all over the country."
