Program Overview
- Program Description:
- Montana Tech’s Environmental Engineering program integrates course work and research to provide the required knowledge base to solve environmental problems worldwide. Research projects include challenges facing the minerals industry in air and water quality engineering, land and stream restoration, and air diffusion modeling. Additional research is being conducted regarding mercury in old gold mine sites, mercury in pristine forested areas, and developing new control devices for mercury emissions for coal fired power plants. Human health risk analysis regarding heavy metals exposure over long periods of time in mining and processing operations is an area of growing interest. The companies who hire our Environmental Engineering students hold them in high regard for the education they have received at Montana Tech. Jesse Woodward, one of Tech’s Environmental Engineering graduates, testifies: “Getting my master degree not only helped to get a great job with a respected company, it also helped me to stay in Montana. Professionally, I plan to become a registered PE and continue to progress with my new job. Getting my master’s is one of the best decisions I’ve made. I’ve learned twice as much in 2 years as a graduate compared to 4 years as an undergraduate in Environmental Engineering.” Keri Petritz, Environmental Engineering Graduate Student, took home first place for her presentation entitled “Resource Recovery of Belmont Mine Water” at the 2007 Pacific Northwest International Section (PNWIS) conference of the Air & Waste Management Association. Students were evaluated on technical content, visual aids and presentation skills, and given cash awards for outstanding presentations. Research projects relate to the environmental challenges facing the minerals industry. However, the research results and coursework have general application to the solution of environmental engineering problems worldwide.
