Program Overview

Program Description:
The mission of the Master of Architecture Degree programs and the teaching and learning culture within the Department of Architecture and Interior Design is to conduct architectural inquiry in the pursuit of new forms of knowledge and, through rigorous professional preparation, construct critical practices that empower students to interpret, engage and give form to the ideas and forces that impact their world. The Master of Architecture (M. Arch.) is a graduate degree that is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). In addition to a period of professional internship, the M. Arch. degree qualifies individuals for the Architectural Registration Examination and licensure in architecture. Miami's graduate program in architecture accepts students from three different preparation backgrounds. Students from pre-professional undergraduate architecture programs who wish to complete their professional education will apply to the M. Arch. II program. Those who have earned an undergraduate degree in fields other than architecture will apply to the M. Arch. III program. Additionally, students who have already completed an accredited Bachelor of Architecture (B. Arch.) degree at a North American college or university, and who wish to pursue a specialized field of research, may apply to the M. Arch. I program. Graduate study in architecture at Miami University is based upon inquiry that assists the student in forming a set of critical architectural practices to guide their intellectual and professional development. A rigorous professional curriculum and renowned graduate thesis process, in both written and design formats, prepare graduates for entry into the architectural profession and its related disciplines from a position of strength and vitality. Across the curriculum students critically assess their world, position themselves within it, and engage the forces they see as shaping it as they offer ideas and give form to their design solutions. Numerous opportunities to engage in research, field study, and off-campus experiences expand and apply student knowledge beyond the studio and classroom. As part of the application process, all students are considered for significant financial support. Competitively awarded, all graduate students receiving assistantships receive remission of 93% of the comprehensive fee and the full out-of-state tuition surcharge (if applicable) for the length of their appointment. Assistantships for masters students can be renewed for a second year. We look forward to personally assisting you in the pursuit of your graduate education in architecture at Miami University which learning through exploration is encouraged.
