Program Overview

Program Description:

Mercer University’s Tift College of Education is the largest private preparer of professional educators in Georgia.  In addition to a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs, Tift’s Educational Leadership Program offers the P-12 School Leadership track for the Ph.D in Educational Leadership degree.  The vision and mission of the college is professional preparation of ‘Transforming Practitioners’ in primary, secondary and post-secondary institutions, both public and private.  The program begins two cohorts annually each Fall term; one at the Macon campus and one at the Atlanta campus.

Program Goals:
  1. To prepare educational leaders for Georgia’s higher education institutions.
  2. To meet the growing demand for highly prepared academic leaders in Georgia who are consumers of research and whose practices are influenced by that research.
  3. To provide leaders in higher education with a research-based and applicable skill sets to ensure successful operations of colleges and university programs.
  4. To develop partnerships with higher education institutions and agencies.
The program is designed for university leaders and practitioners who wish to use research-based leadership skills in the academic community in preparation for positions such as president, dean, provost and other leadership roles in student services, financial aid, housing, admissions. etc.  Candidates interested in earning a doctorate in preparation for teaching at the college level should explore doctoral degrees in a specific academic area.
The annual Fall PhD cohort will convene classes one weeknight evening per week from 5pm-9:30pm, in two 8-week sessions over a 16-week semester.

Requirements:
- A bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution; - GPA 3.5 on a 4.0 scale; - An official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score report (target score for exams taken after August 1, 2011 is 151 on the quantitative, 151 on the verbal, and 4.0 on the analytic sections; the target combined score in GRE’s previous format is 1100 or better on the combined quantitative and verbal and 4.0 on the analytic section). Official test score reports must be within last five years at the time of application: the institution code is 4369; - Two official transcripts of all college work attempted; - Narrative of career and academic goals; - A current vita or resume; - Three professional letters of reference - A completed, signed Application for Admission; - A $35 application fee, waived for alumni of Mercer University
