Program Overview

Program Description:

The Department of English and Modern Languages offers programs leading to the degree of Master of Arts in English with concentrations in Creative Writing, in Literature, in English Education and Writing, and in English 6-12 Initial Teaching Licensure. All graduate students in the Creative Writing or Literature concentrations must write a thesis; students in the English Education and Writing concentration may choose to write a thesis or take a comprehensive examination; students in the 6-12 Initial Licensure concentration take a comprehensive examination. In addition, the department offers courses in support of the Master of Science in Education/Curriculum and Instruction Specialist in Spanish (applicants must already hold a valid teaching license), and the Master of Science in Education/Spanish or ESL PreK-12 Initial Teaching Licensure.

English Education programs are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.
Requirements:
Creative Writing concentration: Applicants must submit a writing sample of not less than ten (10) and not more than twenty (20) pages in the genre of their choice. (10 pages of poetry; or 15 pages of prose/fiction or non-fiction; or 20 pages of drama) and an overall undergraduate GPA of 2.75 (on a 4.0 scale). Final admission to the concentration is granted based on the quality and potential of the work submitted as determined by the Creative Writing Reading Committee. Literature and Education & Writing require an overall undergraduate GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) and a major or minor in English. 6-12 Initia Licensure concentration requires an overall undergraduate GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale), a major or minor in English, and passing Praxis I scores. All four concentrations require two recommendations, a personal essay, and official transcripts from all insitutions attended.
International Requirements:
A credential evaluation to determine equivalency to a U.S. baccalaureate degree the international student and must demonstrate proficiency in the English language through the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or International English Language Testing system (IELTS) if English is not the primary language spoken in the household. A minimum score of 570 (paper test) or 80 (Internet test) is required on the TOEFL or a minimum 6.5 on the IELTS for admission. All applicants are expected to meet all admission requirements in order to be considered as we do not grant conditional admits. .
