Program Description:
This programme is based in the Department of Philosophy, Logic and Scientific Method and is a joint degree with King's College. It offers the following benefits: Together the two departments form perhaps the major centres for the study of philosophy of science in the UK and one of the top handful in the world. The LSE department in particular draws on the traditions set by its founder, Sir Karl Popper, and distinguished followers such as Imre Lakatos. Both the LSE and KCL departments received the top 5* rating ('Centre of international excellence') in the most recent national Research Assessment Exercise. The degree is internationally highly regarded. The Centre for Philosophy of Natural and Social Science housed at LSE is one of the international centres of the discipline and attracts a series of eminent visitors. MSc students benefit from the seminars and research activities at the centre. The Department has close links with other Philosophy departments in the University of London. Many graduate level lecture courses given in other colleges of the University are available to MSc students and are required teaching for some courses. This gives students access to the very rich, general London philosophical environment. Core course - philosophical research and writing seminar. Courses to the value of one unit from: philosophy of science; history of science; philosophical foundations of physics; philosophy of biological and cognitive sciences; philosophy of mathematics; philosophy of economics; rationality and choice; mathematical logic; set theory and further logic, philosophy of the social sciences; evidence, objectivity and policy. You will also complete a 10,000-word dissertation
