Program Overview

Program Description:
This programme is intended for graduates with a good first degree in the following disciplines: geography, sociology, planning, anthropology and any other subject area with a substantive urban studies component. This programme emphasises two areas: first, the importance of culture, political identity and social change in cities at a time of globalisation and post-colonialism; and second, the intersection of the economic and the cultural in urban development and urban life. Urban management is of growing concern in both highly urbanised and rapidly urbanising countries around the world. As more and more of the world's population, especially the poor, are concentrated in cities, the need for economic growth and appropriate forms of urban management becomes more insistent and demands that we pay attention to the highly constructed social and cultural aspects of urban living and development. Compulsory courses: Cities, Spaces and Society; dissertation. Students also select a major and minor area of study totaling two course units from the following: Globalisation, Gender and Development; Globalisation, Regional Development and Policy; Globalisation: Cities, Immigration, States; Globalisation and Social Change: a Gender Perspective; Spatial Approaches to Urban Sociology; Cultural, and Creative Industries; Cities, People and Poverty in the South or Cities, Culture and Politics in the South; Gender, Space and Society or Gender and Development: Geographical Perspective or Gender, Work and Urbanisation; Economic Aspects of Project Appraisal; Race and Space.
