Mental Health & Wellbeing MA, PG Certificate Aims of the course This programme will develop the skills, knowledge and insight of those who support people with problems related to mental health. The focus is particularly on promoting health and inclusion, and on social factors affecting wellbeing. Students will engage critically with concepts of health and illness in relation to mental health, and examine both mental health promotion and mental illness prevention, as well as the concept of wellbeing. For this students will engage with the service user perspective, the recovery model and the importance of social participation and community development in mental health. They will understand and analyse the epidemiological evidence base, and explore theory, methods, ethics, politics and economic considerations. Their analysis of the evidence to support specific types of intervention to enhance wellbeing and insight into what public mental health strategies may help, will be developed in parallel with their insights, empathy and skills in communication through an introduction to brief therapies. These skills and insights will be applied to the students own working context. Entry requirements The normal entry requirement is a good Honours degree or equivalent in a relevant academic subject (eg a social science) or professional programme. However, applicants with other qualifications but substantial relevant work experience may be considered and are encouraged to apply. Applicants for whom English is not their first language must demonstrate sufficient proficiency in both written and spoken English. The minimum requirement is one of the following: IELTS 6 or above; TOEFL (old examination); 580 minimum; TOEFL (new examination) 237 minimum.
